Heimon valmennusosaamista NAFL:iin – Joel ”Pomppu” Ekroos lähtee valloittamaan Amerikkaa!

Westend Indiansin A-poikien vastuuvalmentaja Joel Ekroos lähtee kesällä luotsaamaan NAFL-joukkue Fort Worth Jaguarsia. 5 viikon mittaisen kesällä pelattavan North American Floorball Leaguen ensimmäinen kausi käynnistyy kesäkuussa ja eurooppalaisilta henkilöiltä odotetaan osaamisen viemistä Pohjois-Amerikan salibandyväelle.

English version below!

NAFL:n aloittamisesta ilmoitettiin syksyllä ja sarja herätti heti suurta kiinnostusta suomalaisessa lajiväessä. Erityisesti Kallocastin johdolla sarjaa on pidetty pinnalla läpi talven. Pelaajahakemuksia ”taalaliigaan” on satanut Suomen lisäksi ympäri Eurooppaa ja sarjan yhtenä tavoitteena on kasvattaa lajia mm. tuomalla salibandyosaamista muualta paikallisen osaamisen tueksi.

Sarjan neljä joukkuetta (Fresno Force, Cleveland Buccaneers, Texas Tornadoes & Fort Worth Jaguars) tulevat eri puolilta maata. Pitkien etäisyyksien vuoksi runkosarja pelataan neljänä 3 ottelun viikonloppuna sekä lopuksi sarja kruunataan pudotuspeli- ja finaaliviikonlopulla.

Pitkän linjan Heimolaisen, Joel Ekroosin, valmentama joukkue Fort Worth Jaguars sijaitsee Teksasissa, n. 50 kilometrin päässä Dallasista.

Mitä odotuksia sulla on kaudesta - lähdetkö rennoin fiiliksin vai tosissaan hakemaan pokaalia?

Aika paljon tämän lisäksi pelaajia, joiden status on: ehkä lähdössä.

Pari suomalaista oli jo kiinnitetty jengiin – montako pelaajaa aiot ottaa Heimosta mukaan viemään sählykulttuuria eteenpäin?

– Heimosta mukana on pari pelaajaa.

Coaching skills from the Tribe to the NAFL - Joel “Pomppu” Ekroos goes to conquer USA!

Head coach of Westend Indians U21, Joel Ekroos, is set to coach NAFL team Fort Worth Jaguars. The first season of the 5-week-long North American Floorball League, which will be played in the summer, kicks off in June and Europeans are expected to bring their floorball skills and culture to the North American floorball club.

The launch of the NAFL was announced in the autumn, and the series immediately aroused great interest in the Finnish floorball community, especially in the local podcast Kallocast, where the NAFL have had an own spot throughout the winter. In addition to Finland, there have been player applications to the USA from all over Europe. One of the goals of the league is to develop the sport by bringing floorball expertise from elsewhere to support and teach the local players and coaches.

The four teams in the series (Fresno Force, Cleveland Buccaneers, Texas Tornadoes & Fort Worth Jaguars) come from different parts of the United States. Due to the long distances, the regular season will be played over four 3-match weekends and finally the winner will be crowned in a playoff and final weekend.

Fort Worth Jaguars, which will be coached by a long-line Tribe member Joel Ekroos, is based in Texas, about 50 kilometers from Dallas. The city is one of the fastest growing in the United States and currently has a population of over 900,000.

How did you end up applying for the team?

¬– A player who is going to play for the Jaguars asked if I would be interested in going to the USA to coach next summer. I applied and ended up as coach.

Have you already started preparing for the season and when will you start working with the team?

- Now I’ve mostly been going through the European players. There was already one team meeting with the players who were confirmed at the time, where we mostly got to know each other.

- During the winter a tournament was played there, and I got video material about the players and I saw a bit of their level of playing. After seeing it I could start giving tips for training.

What expectations do you have for the season - do you go there with a relaxed feeling or are you serious about lifting the trophy?

- I’m going there relaxed, and I’ll try not to stress so much in there either. Of course, every time you start competing, you have to go for a win, otherwise it is pointless.

What do you know about the team at this point?

– There are currently about three lines of players. I’m the one who has picked the players from Europe, so I would say that we are starting to have a good team for the upcoming season.

– European players are currently from Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland and the Czech Republic. Also a lot of players whose status is: maybe.

A couple of Finns were already signed to the team - how many players do you plan to take from the Tribe to take the American floorball culture forward?

– There will be a couple of players from the Tribe. One of these is already published, Sami Ilonen from the men’s second team. He is also writing a blog on Pääkallo about his season. We’ll soon hear some more player news, Ekroos says.

President of Fort Worth Jaguars, Brian Radichel, told us a bit about NAFL from the local point of view:

As it’s the first season of NAFL, what are your goals this summer?

– Our primary goal is to bring a high level of floorball to the Dallas-Fort Worth community and excite people to get out and try floorball. We have run a successful small league and a few pickup games around town, but we have not really built a successful youth program in the schools, camps during the breaks, or weekend leagues for adults.

– We think there are a lot of sports fans in town and floorball is a fun, exciting sport to play that has a very low-cost entry point and is accessible to all.

You have a few European players there as well. Will they play professionally, do you offer accommodation and playing or are players paying for everything?

– For the first season, we are setting the expectations that European players will pay their own way to play. We are building our brand and hope to have sponsors but without a product to show the first year, money is very tight.

– We are hoping instead to offer the players an experience in the United States that revolves around floorball and being ambassadors for the sport.  If we can help offset some of their costs at the end of the season, that would be great!

Since it’s only a short season, what would you like to see Joel bring to the club during summer to make your off-season (and next season) better?

– We’re very excited that Joel chose to join our club.  We are hoping that he will bring floorball instruction to us and teach our local players and coaches the best way to coach the game and play the game.  We hope that the technical floorball skills that European players and fans take for granted will become more common here because of his coaching.

– We will work our players during the off-season here in town and will continue to have local practices to build the skills we need to improve the game in the US.

Thanks for the interviews and good luck for the exotic summer season “Pomppu” and Fort Worth Jaguars! Next week we’ll hear more player news, but while you’re waiting for it, it’s worth to follow the team’s social media channel, it’s only two months before the season starts!
